JAMB Subject Combination for All Courses 2027/2028

Are you preparing for the 2027/2028 JAMB UTME and looking for the correct subject combination for your preferred course? Choosing the right subjects is one of the most important steps in your admission journey. A wrong subject combination can make you ineligible for admission, even if you obtain a high UTME score.

This guide provides a comprehensive list of JAMB subject combinations for popular courses in Nigerian universities and other tertiary institutions, covering Medicine and Surgery, Law, Nursing, Pharmacy, Engineering, Computer Science, Accounting, Economics, Mass Communication, Education, Agriculture, Arts, Social Sciences and many more.

If you are searching for the JAMB subject combination for 2027/2028 for all courses, use the tables below to find your course and identify the four subjects you should select for UTME registration.

Important: English Language is compulsory for all UTME candidates. The other three subjects depend on your chosen course and the requirements of your preferred institution. Always confirm your final combination using the official JAMB IBASS Eligibility Checker before registering.

JAMB-Subject-Combination-Guide

What Is JAMB Subject Combination?

JAMB subject combination refers to the four subjects a candidate is required to register for and sit for in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) when applying for admission into a particular course.

The four subjects normally consist of:

  • Use of English, which is compulsory.
  • Three other subjects specified for the proposed course of study.

For example, a candidate applying for Medicine and Surgery will generally need English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Someone applying for Law will usually need English Language, Literature in English and two other accepted subjects, subject to the institution’s requirements.

You should not choose your subjects simply because you are good at them. You must select the subjects required for your intended course and institution.

Important Note for Medical Courses

Do not assume that every health-related programme has identical requirements. Some programmes have specific subject rules, and certain professional programmes may not be available at every university.

For Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Science and other competitive courses, check the exact programme entry requirements, including the required O’Level credits, before registering for JAMB.

Is Mathematics Compulsory for Social Science Courses?

Mathematics is important for many Social Science courses, particularly Economics, Statistics, Actuarial Science and programmes involving quantitative analysis.

However, the UTME subject combination is different from the O’Level requirement. A course may not require Mathematics as one of the four UTME subjects but may still require a credit in Mathematics at SSCE level.

Always check both requirements.

How to Check the Official JAMB Subject Combination for Your Course

The safest way to confirm your combination for the 2027/2028 admission exercise is through JAMB’s official Integrated Brochure and Syllabus System.

Follow these steps:

  1. Visit the official JAMB IBASS Eligibility Checker.
  2. Select your mode of entry.
  3. Select the type and category of institution you intend to apply to.
  4. Choose your preferred institution.
  5. Select your intended course or programme.
  6. Enter your O’Level credits and passes as applicable.
  7. Review the UTME subjects displayed by the eligibility checker.
  8. Confirm that your proposed combination matches the programme’s requirements before completing JAMB registration.

You can also visit the JAMB IBASS Brochure by Programme or the Brochure by Institution to review the requirements associated with a course or institution.

Do not rely solely on an old brochure, a social media post or an unofficial subject-combination list. Use the official requirements available for your intended admission session.

Common Mistakes Candidates Make When Choosing JAMB Subjects

Avoid these mistakes when registering for the 2027/2028 UTME.

1. Choosing the Wrong Science Subjects

A candidate applying for Medicine, Pharmacy or Nursing should not assume that any three science subjects will be accepted. These programmes generally require Physics, Chemistry and Biology alongside English Language.

2. Assuming Every Course Has the Same Combination in Every University

Two universities may offer similarly named programmes but specify different acceptable subjects or alternatives. Check the requirements for your chosen institution rather than relying on a general list alone.

3. Confusing UTME Subjects With O’Level Subjects

Your four UTME subjects are not the same as the five or more SSCE credit passes required for admission. You must satisfy both sets of requirements.

4. Ignoring Literature in English

Candidates applying for Law, English and some communication or Arts programmes may need Literature in English. Do not replace it with Government or another subject unless the official requirements permit that choice.

5. Assuming a High JAMB Score Will Fix a Wrong Combination

A high UTME score does not automatically make a candidate eligible for a programme if the required subjects were not taken.

6. Registering for a Course Without Checking Its Availability

Confirm that your preferred institution offers the exact course for the relevant admission session and that you meet its entry requirements.

7. Forgetting to Check O’Level Mathematics and English Requirements

A course may require Mathematics or English Language at SSCE level even when one of those subjects is not among the three additional UTME subjects for that programme.

Frequently Asked Questions About JAMB Subject Combination 2027/2028

Is English Language compulsory for all JAMB candidates?

Yes. English Language is compulsory for UTME candidates and is selected by default in JAMB’s official eligibility checker.

How many subjects do I need to register for in JAMB?

UTME candidates normally register for four subjects, including English Language and three other subjects required for their proposed course of study.

What is the JAMB subject combination for Medicine and Surgery in 2027/2028?

The commonly required combination is English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Confirm the specific requirements of your preferred university before registration.

What is the JAMB subject combination for Nursing in 2027/2028?

Nursing Science generally requires English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Candidates should also verify the institution’s O’Level and other admission requirements.

What is the JAMB subject combination for Law?

Law generally requires English Language, Literature in English and two other subjects accepted by the institution. Government, CRS, IRS and History may be accepted, depending on the official requirements.

What is the JAMB subject combination for Computer Science?

Computer Science commonly requires English Language, Mathematics, Physics and one other accepted subject. The exact fourth subject should be confirmed for the chosen university or polytechnic.

Can I gain admission if I choose the wrong JAMB subject combination?

Choosing the wrong combination can make you ineligible for your intended course. Do not assume that a high score will compensate for missing a required subject. Check the official requirements before registration.

Can I change my JAMB subject combination after registration?

Whether a correction is available depends on JAMB’s applicable procedures and the circumstances of your registration. Contact JAMB through its official channels and confirm the available options before taking action. Do not rely on unofficial promises that a correction is guaranteed.

Are JAMB subject combinations the same for universities and polytechnics?

Not necessarily. Degree programmes and ND programmes may have different entry requirements, even when their course names are similar. Check the requirements for the exact institution and programme.

Has JAMB released the official 2027/2028 subject combinations?

Candidates should check the official IBASS system for the current requirements and any updates applicable to the 2027/2028 admission exercise. Do not assume that an older brochure automatically reflects every requirement for the new session.

Where can I check my JAMB subject combination?

Use the official JAMB Eligibility Checker and the IBASS Brochure by Programme.

What happens if I select the correct subjects but do not meet the O’Level requirements?

You may still be ineligible for admission. The correct UTME combination is only one part of the admission requirements. You must also satisfy the prescribed O’Level credits and any other requirements for your programme.

Conclusion

Choosing the correct JAMB subject combination is an essential step towards gaining admission into a Nigerian university, polytechnic or other tertiary institution for the 2027/2028 academic session.
